Moving with Kids? 5 Smart tips for Relocation

Moving to a new country, city or even a new place can be daunting, especially if you have a young child. Thankfully, Australia can be very welcoming, thanks to its culture & opportunities for education & growth.

Thinking about relocating, but don’t know how to convince your kids to move? Follow these simple tips to overcome challenges and make it seem like an adventure!

1. Maintain Routine as much as you can –

Sometimes moving to a new place can be a disruptive event in our lives. To relocate, we tend to plan in advance, organise, follow our to-do list and prepare ourselves for moving. Though this may sound easy if you’re an adult, it can be quite distressing for your child. Children don’t always understand the nitty-gritty of moving and may see this as an incredible change in their lives and may not always cosy up to the idea at first. So, as a parent, you can always maintain a steady routine in order to keep the chaos under control. Whether it is their play or study time, going out with friends, or even their favourite toys, make sure they are given the same routine till the day you move. But most importantly, don’t forget to mention to them the new place you’re moving to and the reason why. Reassure them that they will have plenty to play with – new school, new places to explore and of course new friends!

2. Communicate with your Kids –

Moving is difficult, but moving with your kids – thinking about relocating permanently can be overwhelming for any parent. Though you can take your time to calm yourself and think about the moving process, while you’re busy with calling people & getting the help, remember to communicate with your kids as to why you’re shifting. Whatever their age, as a parent you’re expected to take the first step and introduce them to the idea of moving away. Don’t be blunt but don’t be shy either. They must know some day, so, the sooner, the better! Who knows, your kids might see this as an adventure and even help you pack!

3. Give Your Kids Something to Look Forward To –

Unlike you – an adult who can easily recuperate with lifestyle changes, your child sees the world around them as their own. Just the thought of them giving up their school, favourite playground and even their closest friends can make them hurt, so you shouldn’t blame them for being resistant.

Instead try to look at things from their perspective and give me more to look forward to each day. Start with describing the new house with features the kids might love – a vibrant neighbourhood, new friends, a new toy store, etc. This will surely make them worry less about their current home and they may even ask you to move to the new home sooner.

4. Ask Your Kids for Help –

A busy kid is a happy kid! Involve your kids in small daily chores or even something as exciting as packing a box with their favourite toys. Not only will this distract them for the sadness of leaving, but will also cheer them up. Want help with small chores your kid is better at doing? Don’t think, just give them a task at hand and watch them become playfully busy. Remember to keep the conversation going, and of course- to take a well deserved break!

5. Get the right service provider –

What better than a removalist service who is efficient? The one who will be friendly with your kids! Don’t worry; no preparation is needed for this one. When you book your removalist, make sure you mention that you’re relocating with your kids and we’re sure they’ll be more than happy to have some tiny hands to help.

During the actual relocation, ensure that your kids are safe and in your sight at all times. Do not rely on a removalist to worry for your kids, as it may not always be part of their job. If you’re feeling overwhelmed with the moving process, a babysitter will come in very handy. Introduce them to your children beforehand to ensure they’re in safe hands and to make the moving process smoother.
